The City of Toledo Prosecutor’s Office is responsible for prosecuting misdemeanor criminal cases in Toledo Municipal Court. When police arrest someone for a misdemeanor in the city of Toledo, law enforcement directly files misdemeanor charges with the Toledo Municipal Court. Some cases also begin when the Office decides to pursue a case following an appointment with a victim seeking charges. The high volume of cases handled by the Office includes a wide spectrum of offenses ranging from minor misdemeanors to more serious first-degree misdemeanors. While traffic-related offenses make up a significant portion, the Office regularly handles cases involving driving under the influence, crimes against people and property, and domestic violence.
Since 2020, the number of misdemeanor cases filed with the Office has ranged between 5,000 and 7,000 per quarter. In 2024, the most frequent criminal offenses charged (by most serious charge filed in each case) were domestic violence and disorderly conduct. The most common traffic and vehicle-related offenses include moving violations and driving on a suspended license.
